Area IT-Security

The PartnerGate www.partnergate.com is a web application in which customers can manage their domain portfolio.

Challenge

Customers log in to the web application with username and password. The problem is conditional security, as passwords can get into unauthorized hands through various ways and programs such as viruses, trojans, keyloggers, sniffers, or simple inattention.

Goal

Increase security by using an authentication technology that uses several factors to increase IT security, so that the login must be verified by username and password by a second authentication.

Result

A 2-factor authentication system based on the time-based one-time password (TOTP) method has been developed. The customer’s own smartphone is set up as a hardware token, which generates random one-time passwords based on a previously exchanged key, which must be entered as an additional information. This procedure is the case, e.g. according to a Report of the FAZ, in theory, the most secure method to ensure that the person logging in is also the person he or she claims to be. In the event of a loss or defect of the smartphone, there is the possibility of alternative to a procedure via SMS.

The advantages of this modern security standard are the inherently increased security, increased trust of happy customers in the provider of the web application as well as a relief of the support of PartnerGate.
